Abraham Lincoln fue el decimosexto presidente de los Estados Unidos. Era, fue, estuvo, estaba??? Use era ser for descriptions, who or what things were or how they were. This includes the time. Era la una. When he was a child, he was handsome.
Use fue ser to look at things more from an event perspective, to state what or how things happened and to express the passive voice. La primera lavadora fue inventada en The first washing machine was invented in He was hit by a ball. Estuve cenando.
So can estaba and era be used interchangeably? It just seems like a lot of little particular grammar rules. I don't know how anyone can remember them all. Although both translate to a form of "to be" in English, Spanish-speaking people consider estar and ser to be different verbs. Each of these verbs has its own purpose, and is therefore not interchangeable with the other. There is also a difference between the use of the imperfect and the preterite.
Both are past tenses but are used in different ways. After you understand both these concepts, "Fue, Era, Estaba, Estuvo" will become much easier. At that point, you'll be able to better detect when to use which in each situation.
Estaba is the imperfect past so is used for things that were interrupted or that you did routinely so it can be translated different ways. Estaba yendo al cine cuando - he was going to the cinema when followed by the interupting action. The last one isn't really exactly translated into English but that was clearest was I could think to put it. Hola Qiunnn! I was going to the cinema Yo iba al cine cuando etc. Espero haber ayudado.
The cinema was just an example to show how the imperfect can be used , for habits ect. The point was to demonstrate all the different meanings estaba could have in English but I probably could have chosen a better example. I was going to the movies when It might be possible to use estaba as an auxiliary with ir, but I don't recall having heard it used that way. Did you see those example somewhere? After the interruption, I returned to what I was doing. I did not return to that activity after the interruption.

Both estar and ser together comprise almost all the meanings that in english fall into the verb "to be".
Ser takes many of the meanings, estar takes most of the remaining ones. Ser is usually employed regarding matters of essence. Gender, nationality, profession, etc. Estar is usually employed regarding matters of state or location.
En un rato te cuento mis conclusiones. Being able to master the uses of ser and estar is an essential part of spanish learning and requires a lot of practices. Pace yourself and don't despair. A bit confusing I know, but you'll get the hang of it. You guys are both amazing. See a translation. Thanks for all of the help!
