All you have to do is walk in, show them that you are a member, and enjoy your exercise. As such, you can find at least one of these facilities in every single state in the country and in most cases, you can find multiple Planet Fitness locations in one small geographic area. Another reason that the gym is so successful successful is because they know how to market themselves and they do it well. Because of that partnership, the gym was prominently featured on virtually every episode.
It also helped people understand that they really were on board with helping people of all fitness levels and that their only concern is that you learn how to live a healthier life that works for you, not that you become a supermodel or a bodybuilder.
The same applies to those gyms that are so dirty they make you feel like you need a decon shower when you walk out. They have free weights and all kinds of strength training equipment. As matter of fact, most of the facilities have so much that you might feel a little overwhelmed the first couple of times you go.
The same is true for cardio. Almost all of the Planet Fitness locations also provide group fitness classes. If you prefer this type of activity to exercising alone, you can certainly find it here. In addition, they make it easy because in most cases, all you have to do is go on the website and click on a particular location in order to find out what their schedule is. In addition to getting fit, you can also get a tan there. There are few things more rewarding than a nice massage after a grueling workout.
All you have to do is drop in a couple of tokens and you can enjoy one of their massage chairs, and to up the ante, most of these massage chairs are in a remote location where you can have a little bit of alone time even when the gym is busy. One of the things that really sets this gym apart from its competition and that you can bring a guest every single day. Garrett by trade is a personal finance freelance writer and journalist.
With over 10 years experience he's covered businesses, CEOs, and investments. That and the dumbells at the ones in northeast ohio only reach 60lbs. Im not a body builder or a extreme power lifter. But i am strong. And to burn fat i.
Basically weight thats stresses reps. Not all strong lifters are lunks. I have been a member since The best place to work out. I go to the one in Bangor,Maine. Have never had a bad day there. Employees are very nice ,always a smile and say have a great day on your way out.
I would recommend this place to anyone who would like a place to work out and not feel out of place. Crowded in evenings and There are a couple members there nightly who show off their steroid filled muscles by constantly wearing those loose string bikini type loose muscle t shirts. But no lunk hard alarms ever sound.
I guess the rules are soft. I agree that it is very clean. I see people wiping down the machines the entire time im there. Someone even goes around periodically with an electric sweeper not sure of exact name. We just want to kickstart something. Then somewhere down the line upgrade to another gym that offers more. If you want to be Mr.
Olympia, then its not for you. I also agree about the knowledge of the staff - mainly the ones working the desk. They have no clue when it comes to describing the machines I knew more about it than they did. This needs to be updated. Most have free wifi now, and classes scheduled frequently. Not to mention the Black Card spa One thing I like about planet fitness is as a relative new member in a small town, it is not very expensive, has a clean facility and the hours are great.
The other places in this town have raped people for years and basically had a "take it or leave it" attitude. If I want to use the massage beds or chairs without working out, I can I'm a black card member. I especially like the fact I can take a friend for free to workout. That does important things in my mind:. Planet Fitness is amazing. They have a variety of different machines. Concerning the unhealthy eating; not all healthy eating is bad and they sell mini tootsie roll that probably only have 8 calories in them.
Some people may push themselves too hard and need a lifter for their sugar levels, and its okay for some to have a tootsie roll for crying out loud.
They are giving me grief about having a hand towel that I bought from them at the trendmill with me. They are afraid it will fall onto the moving belt causing me to fall yet they continue to allow people with their cell phones on the trendmill and I have seen alot of them drop their phones and fall off of the trendmill.
I think this is the owner being controlling. We do sign a wavier letting PF out of liability. I have been a member for a year and have yet to encounter any issues. All I wanted was a clean safe place to use equipment, they exceed any expectations I had. I travel a bit in my business so I have had the opportunity to visit many other locations. Some were not as clean as others or a bit older but all were adaquate.
The black membership also allows me to bring guests an unlimited number of times. I once went to a Grand Opening and they had a nice spread from Pinera, it was the only time I ate at the gym. They also have free cheap ballpoint pens, I have no interest in cheap pens so I ignore them. It is very clear there business model depends on having a large base of members who rarely if ever go to the gym. How else could they have such expansive facilities at the price offered.
I go to PF almost every day, often with a guest. My home location is Brockton, Ma at Westgate mall. There is free wi-fi, clean showers, endless equipment, and adaquate staffing. The Black Card members area with hydro massage and tanning is a nice touch. The terms of the contract are pretty clear.
Understand what your agreeing to and comply with the terms and you will not have any issues. It could not have been simpler. I went to the desk and told them what I wanted, it was done without question. Ok, I am far from a olimpic athlete. If you are a competitive athlete Planet Fitness May not be for you. If you want a clean quiet place to do your workouts at an unbelievable value Planet Fitness is perfect for you. The free WiFi is amazing.
As far as the pizza, bagels and grape tootsie rolls, no one is forcing me to eat them. Planet fitness is awesome and it does offer classes.. I appreciated the balanced approach of your analysis. As a former Army Ranger, I would only ever hypothetically use a PF for cardio, or if needed a safe house during a zombie apocalypse that had stockpiles of frozen pizzas.
While I find it egregious that a business model like theirs has succeeded, I do understand that the easy-access cardio machinery can be useful and effective for some. Patrons are encouraged to consume them. The lunk alarm concept has been migrated to the cardio machines, where any movement that is too fast or aggressive will result in a slight electrocution nothing too harmful , and the now ex-member will be invited to leave.
Basically, the adjective Krispy can describe both experiences, depending on how you behave yourself. Great review. Personally I like the Pizza night since I can work out some times and get a slice and not have to worry about what I'm doing for dinner but I do see how it could be a very bad idea to offer this. This means my wife and I have a membership for 20 since we always go together.
I switched to PF from In shape. I have never seen the alarm go off myself either and I like the price - 10 a month. I don't understand the pizza either and have seen people waiting around for it believe it or not. They offer Hungry Howies here which is pretty basic. I do like the 24 hours and that is probably the best point about it I don't care for the showers where I have my membership.
In Shape was much nicer in that area. My husband and I joined Planet Fitness after canceling our 2yr. We were hesitant at first due to some of the ugly reviews we found online, but glad we checked them out ourselves to form our own opinions. Circuit, PF Refresh a yoga-like breathing, stretching, and core workout , PF Burn cardio class , or PF Strength self explanatory , and an Orientation class teaching you how to utilize the equipment on offer.
You can also schedule time with the trainer to set up a workout specific to you and your needs. For whatever lack of experience the staff may have concerning the equipment; however, they make up for in cleanliness and kindness.
We all do, however, take full advantage of the unlimited Black Card access to the HydroMassage beds, massage chairs, tanning, and even use the Total Body Enhancement chamber less the shaking feature as a 12min infrared sauna.
In fact, all have showers, and the ones at PF are usually located next to private change areas helpful for the shy. Oh and, you will need a checking account to start your membership! They do not accept credit cards, so keep that in mind if you're interested. First impression and first 3 weeks working out at PF.
I was coming from la fitness- loved but never used pool or hot tub. The PF-staff was very friendly and still is every time I walk in. I have seen overweight members working out and they seem comfortable and I think that is great. I would encourage young and old to join. Please go through orientation classes so as to know how to use some machines. I had to cancel once. He looked me up and cancelled. No issues. You also can continue to use it for that month. They have group classes in the circular area but otherwise no, no yoga, spinning etc.
Course at these rates you can afford to go elsewhere. Horrible customer service at the Dallas Westmoreland location management seems to be going on a power Trip don't waste your time here. I tried PF but I quit after a few months. Lack of classes was one thing. Lack of a pool also. And yeah, I don't think they should be handing out bagels, candy, and pizza. Put out some healthier, lower-calorie snacks maybe? Get people revved up about healthy eating! Gyms should promote an all-around healthy lifestyle, not a cycle of addiction.
And they go so far to be "judgment free", ie, for regular people, that I worry that they alienate people who are really serious about working out. I have just started going to PF and love it. It's nice and quiet which I like, also my PF does have free wifi. I'm not sure if it depends on the owner. The planet fitness we have in our town has Wi-Fi, Dress code isn't a big deal, I've never noticed the food. But again I don't go there to eat.
And Classes run all day long. Tear in my beer country music and planet fitness gym workout do not mix are they trying to drive us away? The price is what enticed me to join. The place is pretty clean but mostly because the members are expected to wipe down the equipment after each use which is good.
Lots of machines which seem to be well maintained and fairly new. Limited free weights which discourages the "roid freaks" Staff seems friendly without the typical gym "attitude". Open 24 hours which is great. But I've read lots of complaints about cancellation hassles and that is a bit concerning.
Membership fees excludes sales tax. All in all, I'd recommend PF. How is that okay? The point of a gym is to build strength, not cap out and stay soft. Now my husband can't work out because 60lbs is literally air for him.
True, so many clientel so many planet fitness and can't believe they can't afford internet for their members.. What won me over is most of the things mentioned in this article, but I love that it's kind of relax about nutrition and fitness. I think PF represents what a lifelong goal of healthier eating and fitness should model; everything in moderation. Fitness is a long term, life time goal.
Eating habits do not change overnight for the long term. Weight is literally lost one meal at a time and if you slip up at a meal, just eat healthier at the next. I also love, the massage tables and chairs and that I can go to any gym in the USA and bring a friend. Most of my family is reluctant to join a gym; if I can get them to go for free a couple of times; maybe the fitness will become addictive for them and they'll want their own gym membership to attend at their convenience.
My former gym had many local locations but, I grew tired of the inconsiderate staff, that showed favoritism to some patrons and not others. Their price is comparable to PF and sometimes I miss my old gym because its closer to my house, but I am now a PF member who appreciates the staff's courtesy, cleanliness, Wifi, open 24 hours a day, smaller group classes, tootsie rolls, etc.
I am a Plantet Fitner :. One thing I do not like that happens in most gyms is people sit on equipment playing with their cell phones. That is inconsiderate. People are busy and don't have time to wait on equipment. I have been going for a month and enjoy workout and the massage table.
The staff are friendly. The gym is kept clean and neat. Ive seen ppl in sports bras and shorts at the PF i go to. The machines have pictures with how to on them so I don't even ask abt them.
The candy is for ppl with low sugar which can happen working out. I was unaware that pizza and bagels were junk food. There is nothing wrong with a slice or a bagel. Just a comment about the tootsie rolls, many gyms keep a sugary candy at the desk because those with diabetes can get low blood sugar from working out.
My local college's gym even has them. Indianapolis location on W 86th has Wifi, and offers one on one fitness coach. I think group classes are available, although I've not taken advantage of it. I have to find out if it has a scale on the premises. The one I go to has Wifi and group sessions you can sign up for. I've never see a lunk alarm.
They may differ a little by location. Norther IN has several from city to city i'm, sure even they differ just a little. Let me shine some light on your cons because not all of them are so. Also, I'm not trying to be rude, I just feel like there needs to be some explanation for some things. Planet Fitness doesn't encouraged bad eating habits. The tootsies rolls are for your own safety. Sounds crazy right? It isn't. When you do a long, intense workout you run the risk of lowering your blood sugar.
The tootsies rolls basically are there to keep you from passing out or vomiting. Some might argue for healthier choices, yet when your sugar is low you need something sugary like candy. The pizza and breakfast events, on the other hand, are a way for them to connect with their communities. You may see one or two fliers if you go looking. Don't go if you know you can't, no one will judge. It depends on the employees, mine are very knowledgeable and helpful I visit two separate planet fitnesses and this is true for both.
Is it possible the guy you were talking to was relatively new? I have never seen the lunk alarm set off. Actually, if you ask or visit a bigger planet fitness the larger ones have a bigger sign with an explanation , you will find out that the alarm is actually for people who misbehave; such as taunting those who are having difficulty or are being purposely obnoxious.
The dress code only asks that you wear appropriate attire when working out for your safety and liability issues. Other than that, I've seen people wear whatever they want. They do have group classes, you just gotta sign up for them and they limit you to 5 people. Plus there's so much equipment you can call up your friends and workout together; I do this a lot with my sister and her friends.
When it comes to yoga and that, though, yeah you're outta luck. They actually warn you when you sign up that your initial membership is a year long commitment. So that is a con. Also if you cancel your membership after your pay period has passed then that's on you. You're going to be charged, so know when your payment is and cancel before then. Not good enough for streaming movies, but good enough for surfing the web. Thinking about getting a membership.. What is even the point of this?
Grunting means you're trying, and sometimes when doing a lift you're supposed to drop weights. Boot camps are also normally higher energy than personal training or small group training so if you like that go for it. So this is where my bias comes in and I will be honest about this. I own a training gym so this is my favorite which is why I opened one and I will try to be as unbiased as I can with the description.
Training gyms offer large group, small group or semi-private, one-on-one training or any combination of the three, in a smaller space than that of a membership gym. Anywhere from sqft to over 10, sqft. These gyms often do not have access membership nor do they have much in terms of cardio equipment. Training gyms focus on the training, so like most other training based gyms like CrossFit or boot camps, you will not have a membership unless you are getting coached.
This is a blanket description and there are many variations within this category. Training gyms typically will offer some form of a trial so you can try out the gym before you commit to a longer term program.
This is designed so that you can make the best decision possible when it comes to long term training; training gyms want you to be there. There is less of a hard sell mentality in training gyms because you are making a larger financial commitment and to get the best results you have to want to be there.
Training gyms will typically sell 3, 6 and 12 month memberships depending on the structure that is set up, and this will include training X amount of times per month depending on what option you choose. The training at a training gym is different from a boot camp or CrossFit in that it is more customized to you and what you need.
You can pick and choose from the options available to you at that facility. One of the big points is that small group and semi private training is the main option at these training gyms. This is a structure where you share a workout and a coach with up to 3 other people semi private or up to 9 other people small group. These workouts are more customized the smaller you go in group size, which helps you find the level of personal attention and detail that works best for you.
Here at Progressive Performance we focus on 6 people per coach per group which I think is the perfect middle ground when it comes to the right level of attention, personalization, and social interaction. Trainers at training gyms take great pride in their education because their main focus is the training so the quality of instruction is higher than most gyms.
Trainers at training gyms will continue to educate themselves on a regular basis. This is not all training gyms but of the ones I know that would consider themselves in this category are the best in the industry. So if you are looking for personalized attention, educated trainers, community, and options to create the best program for you, a training gym is what you are looking for.
This is my review of the different types of gyms that are out there to help you reach your fitness goals. Let me know what you think or if you want to know more about what I think, feel free to email me any questions you might have. This is all in an effort to help you find the right gym for you.

Boot Camps: Boot camps are either stand alone businesses conducted outside at a park or in a gym that is rented for colder months.
