When was quentin bryce made governor general

I wanted to get on with my career, but had no idea how I was going to do that with two little ones in tow.

The plan was to go into legal practice. The following years were important and influential in my life. I came to understand what community means and learned many things that have stood me in great stead ever since.

We got together to do things. We allocated the jobs; fundraising was constant, endless and fun. We learned how to bring people together, how to organise, how to lobby politicians, write press releases. That environment developed my confidence and taught me how things worked. I learned the basics about running meetings, committees, office bearers, accountability and responsibility.

Updated Ms Bryce was almost always accompanied by her husband, Michael, a modest man with a quiet sense of humour who gave up his lucrative practice as an architect to ensure he could support his wife without distraction.

Ms Bryce had always been something of a pioneer: the first woman to be appointed to the University of Queensland law school faculty, one of the first women to be accepted to the Queensland bar, a leading voice in the feminist movement, a powerful voice against sex discrimination and for equal opportunity.

She was Queensland governor before becoming Governor-General. She revelled in her role as Commander-in-Chief of the Australian Defence Force, and became the only Australian dignitary to stay overnight with her troops in Afghanistan. She once confided to Fairfax that she loved the larrikin nature of Australian soldiers, and told of her delight when, during reviews, a soldier would occasionally snap his head her way and give her a wink.

Her hardest role, she said, was consoling the families of soldiers killed on duty; her most heartfelt words came when awarding Victoria Crosses and other medals for gallantry. She flew to the world's capitals, attended royal weddings and once copped flak for touring 10 African countries in 18 days, partly as an attempt to win support for Australia's bid for a seat on the UN Security Council.
