Can you dove hunt in the rain

On the first, I had to sit in the truck as a tornado came through. On the 2nd, we had to dash to the truck every half hour or so as the rain came and went. Limited out easily both times but I had to do some extra gun cleaning when I was done to make sure it was totally dry. Dustin Pate Administrator Staff member. Dec 2, I also hunt in the rain as long as its not a flat downpour.

If you catch a break the doves will pour in most of the time. One thing is constant the birds will feed, dont be afraid to get wet. Okay, I decided to answer my own question.

Had planned on a group of us from work going out today. Two decided to pass due to weather so it was myself and another guy. We got to the field about so it was raining pretty steady but not pouring. But not all local sportsmen had trouble finding birds. The storm, which dumped much-needed rain on the desert, caused the doves to not need water, and started a migration of the birds out of the area.

The opening of dove season is special for me. Another friend, Kingman resident Steve Tague was hunting in a different area. When Mike, Marc and I pulled up to the stock water we were going to hunt at, we met another pair of hunters who were leaving.

They told us they had been at the water since daylight, and had seen just six doves, and managed to bag just one of the little speedsters. The weather at the time was cloudy, warm and humid. We watched as rain clouds and even fog surrounded the Cerbat Mountains and the desert floor at nearby Red Lake. As it turned out, our optimism was wrong. In the end, there were five of us at the water hole that has consistently produced 15 bird limits for just about all who hunted there. But not this day.

Marc was our top shooter bagging three birds with nine shots. Posts: 4, Wasn't sure how the wood would hold up after being wet all day "it's a tool and i use tools" isn't quite what i was looking for lol. I like looking at them, but I am hard on things and will probably not buy one. Is it finished with oil or polyurethane?

Oil or wax the stock and keep it as dry as possible. It will be fine. I have used a wood stock as a boat paddle. It is a multipurpose tool haha.

I agree that they are tools, but as such, I believe my Benelli is better built for the purpose and conditions. And yes, the doves will be flying during the breaks. Gig 'em! Joined: Jul 15, Fishin Texas Aggie 05 said:. I just cleaned it and let it dry out afterwards.

While light showers, they seem to be on the power lines, trying to get the water off I am assuming so that they weigh less and can fly again. I have some coated guns that are nice that I use from time to time, but I've never worried about it all that much. Oil works wonders when done hunting. The thing to watch out for, is don't let your gun case get wet. If you do, and you oil it all up, and put the gun back in the case, in about a week, you have a rusted gun.

That's more what I worry about. Class of '93 - proud Dad of a '22 grad.
