To get back to Ithaca, they must sail to Hades, the land of the dead. Once they have passed the Sirens' island, Odysseus and his men must navigate the straits between Scylla and Charybdis.
Scylla is a six-headed monster who, when ships pass, swallows one sailor for each head. Charybdis is an enormous whirlpool that threatens to swallow the entire ship. Eurylochus persuades the other crew members to disobey Odysseus and slaughter the cattle of the Sun. They do so one afternoon as Odysseus sleeps; when the Sun finds out, he asks Zeus to punish Odysseus and his men.
Odysseus survives on a raft and floats on the sea for until he reaches Ogygia. Having come to Ithaca, he drove away some of the cattle, and when Odysseus defended them, Telegonus 3 wounded him with the spear he had in his hands, which was barbed with the spine of a stingray, and Odysseus died of the wound. But others say that Odysseus died of Old Age, as Tiresias predicted. Neither the poet nor any of the poem's characters rebuke Odysseus for sleeping with Calypso and Circe , but Penelope is repeatedly criticized for allowing the suitors to remain in her house, even though she has little or no power to expel them.
The royal couple, together again after ten long years of separation, lived happily ever after, or not quite. For in a tragic final twist, an aged Odysseus was killed by Telegonos, his son by Circe, when he landed on Ithaca and in battle, unknowingly killed his own father.
Circe the Beautiful Witch. Circe ranks as one of the greatest witches of mythology. A beautiful enchantress - she likes nothing better than to turn men into pigs. Some have seen her as a bit of a feminist. Mainly, Poseidon hates Odysseus for blinding Polyphemus, who is Poseidon's son. Other reasons include their support for opposing sides in the Trojan war, Poseidon siding with the Trojans and Odysseus with the Greeks. He is not a god , but he does have a connection with the gods on his mother's side of the family.
While on one hunting trip, Odysseus was gored by a wild boar, an incident that left a scar. Why Did Odysseus Leave Ithaca? The Greeks attacked the Trojans in order to return Helen of Troy to Menelaus, and as one of Helen's original suitors, Odysseus had sworn an oath to assist Menelaus. Character Analysis Circe and Calypso The two goddesses with whom Odysseus has extended affairs are similar in that Circe is a devastatingly beautiful goddess-enchantress and Calypso is a devastatingly beautiful goddess-nymph; but they contrast in their motives toward and treatment of Odysseus.
