Maze of ith: land T: Untap target attacking creature. Prevent all combat damage that would be dealt to and dealt by that creature this turn. Once combat damage is on the stack, I use Maze of ith to rescue my creature.

Result: my opponets creature dies and mine survives. I form a massive band. Then I use maze of ith to prevent damage to it. It feels as though the intent is that the creature affect simply does not partake in combat, but I can't see any reason why the above won't work. Perhaps it was different in previous versions of the rules?

And it only does that because it says it. And there lies the problem. This creature neither deals nor receives damage as a result of combat.

I was getting myself in a muddle with regard to dealing combat damage. I figured that if a creature puts its damage on the stack and then gains the 'does not deal damage' ability, it won't matter. The damage is already on its way, has already been dealt. The way the Oracle words it, which I should have read more carefully before copying and pasting, doesn't use thatphrase at all. Note to self: 1 read oracle text 2 post question not the other way round.

Thank you both for your time and clarity. Guest Guest. It's just untapped and mostly harmless now. The combat damage dealt BY your creature will be prevented, as well as the combat damage dealt to it. Both creatures live; all the combat damage, in this case, got prevented - the 2 from your creature, and the 2 to it from the attacker. To only prevent the damage TO your creature, it would have to say "that would be dealt to that creature this turn" without the "and dealt by".

With all of them, I assume. The banding lets you assign the combat damage from the blockers to your creature s , yes. Your assignment is legal. Since none of the blockers have banding, you also assign the combat damage FROM your attacking creatures; you have 34 to divide among the blockers, and can assign it so that anywhere from one to 17 of them have lethal damage assigned but you don't have enough, by 2, to try to kill all of them.

I don't recall MtG having a very fleshed-out mythology, though I freely admit to having not had much interest in it for the past 15 years or so. Jeff - there's a lot of worldbuilding behind it, although since it features multiple themed worlds and the "planeswalkers" that hop between them like gods, lots of little things are half-formed, and plenty of big things don't make it to the flavor text on the cards.
