The railway line really does divide this quaint little suburb into two very disparate demographics. On the west side you have a menagerie of high and medium rise apartments with a very diverse residential cultural mix.

Then you have the east side of the line which is predominantly a conservation zone, inhabited by an anglo majority. The proximity to the CBD and the northern rail corridor is one of the greatest assets of the suburb, and the routing of the new Epping rail line via the North Shore line has provided increased train services to Artarmon. It would be rare to have to wait for more than 10 minutes for a train in peak hours, and more likely to be in the order of 5 minutes between services.

Rental accomodation is reasonably priced considering the convenience of the location. The housing in the conservation area was mostly built around in either Federation or Californian Bungalow styles. Most of the houses have been restored to a good standard and the streetscape makes for very delightful walks. A dedicated bike path passes through Artarmon and provides a safe route all the way to the CBD, with detours to various parks and ovals along the way.

Artarmon is a very nice little suburb that is conveniently located along the Northern stretch of Sydney.

This suburb has a good mix of industries, small local businesses and residential areas. It is only a fifteen minutes drive from Sydney city and ten minutes drive away from Chatswood. Upon exiting the train station on Hampden Road end, you will be greeted by lively small neighbourhood businesses.

There are cafes, bakery, convenience stores and service businesses dotted along this side of the station. The Hampden Road side of the station is perceived to be the "livelier and busier" side of town. On the other side of the station, are some very well kept secrets of Artarmon. This is where you find good quality Japanese food.

I often visit the small Japanese restuarant that is located across an Asian grocery store. The food that is served there is of good quality and is reasonably priced.

Artarmon is also home to many medium sized businesses. When you venture away from the main residential areas and onto Jersey Road, you will notice many low commercial buildings and warehouses. As expected, during the week, Jersey Road does get very crowded and polluted due to the amount of trucks that enter its precinct.

All in all, Artarmon gave me a very good impression and has made me return on numerous occasions to visit its Japanese restaurant. Artarmon is like many of the suburbs along the major train lines of Sydney in that it has a combination of retail, high density and low density uses. The older homes in Artarmon are large, on large blocks of land — many are Federation style.

Because of the large blocks and proximity to the station, those homes close to the train line have given way to apartment buildings, some not very attractive at all, on the southern side of the suburb. The Pacific Highway forms one of the borders of the suburb and in this section there are car dealerships, motor vehicle repairers, hire car companies and other light industrial businesses.

Many families come to live in Artarmon simply for being one of the best public school catchment. Great for Public transport Safe and sound Parks and recreation Schools. Not great for Nightlife.
